Campaigns Tiny Tax on Banks, Billions for the People and the Planet
The US Global AIDS Plan

Since the economic crisis started, AIDS activists have heard a constant refrain from our leaders. They've said that they agree that global AIDS programs should get more money, but they don't know where it will come from. And while they wait for a new idea to fall on their lap, thousands of people who were promised AIDS treatment are being turned away from clinics and forced onto AIDS drug waiting lists.

Lots of ideas are out there about how to generate the billions of dollars that are needed, but one idea is picking up some serious supporters. It's called a Financial Transactions Tax (FTT). Around the world, banks engage in all kinds of risky gambles and make tons of money. These gambles, known as financial transactions, are untaxed. An FTT would attach a 0.5-0.005% tax on various transactions, including swaps, derivatives and foreign exchange, and could raise $400 billion a year for job creation at home, climate change, and AIDS treatment and prevention for millions worldwide.
