Internships 

Media & Communications Intern (Spring 2017)
Brooklyn, NY | 10-12 hrs/week

Health GAP seeks a dynamic, self-starter to join our team as a Media & Communications Intern. The internship will provide hands-on experience in the fields of strategic communications, research strategy, digital strategy, and nonprofit fundraising/development. Applicants should be driven and effective communicators with the ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment. Interns will be given the opportunity to work on a variety of campaigns and to increase their knowledge on pressing global health issues. As a small, dynamic non-profit advocacy organization, we offer you the opportunity to grow with us, as you learn about and contribute to our mission-driven work.  

Interns will be expected to work 10-12 hours per week from our Brooklyn office. While, we are unable to offer paid internships at this time, volunteers will receive an unlimited monthly MetroCard for the duration of their internship.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Updating and streamlining media contact lists

  • Compiling weekly press clips

  • Drafting/copy-editing press releases and media alerts

  • Pitching stories to reporters

  • Posting to social media accounts

  • Spearheading and/or participating in research projects

  • Creating/updating press lists

  • Posting content to the Health GAP website

  • Designing flyers, invitations and other materials for events hosted by Health GAP


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Working toward or recently completed a Bachelors or Masters degree, preferably in a related field (e.g., Media Studies, Communications, Public Relations, Public Policy, Public Health, Political Science, Nonprofit Management).

  • Previous internship or related experience in communications is a plus.

  • Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, PhotoShop, Premiere) skills a plus

  • Must be computer literate (working knowledge of word processing, PowerPoint, Excel). Knowledge of WordPress or Nationbuilder a plus, but not required.

  • An effective communicator, both written and oral.

  • Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines.

Health Global Access Project (Health GAP) is an international advocacy organization that campaigns to ensure that all people living with HIV around the world have access to lifesaving treatment. Created in 1999 by a group of U.S.-based AIDS and human rights activists, public health experts, fair trade advocates, health professionals and other concerned individuals, Health GAP combines policy analysis and advocacy with grassroots movement building, to challenge profiteering by major drug corporations, to mobilize resources for the HIV response, and to advance to health and justice by people living with and most affected by HIV. Health GAP currently has staff based in the United States, Uganda and Kenya.
