Press Release: Dr. Goosby confirmed as Global AIDS Ambassador

Halth GAP is happy to congratulate Dr. Eric Goosby on his confirmation to the position of Ambassador and United States Global AIDS Coordinator. Ambassador Goosby will now have the responsibility of implementing the $48 billion US Global AIDS Initiative reauthorized by Congress last year and bringing the many improvements included in that reauthorization to fruition. | more

Press Release: Lancet Editorial Misinterprets Key WHO Data about Global Health Initiatives

The World Health Organization (WHO) is releasing data in the coming days that demonstrate the impact of “global health initiatives” such as the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, the U.S. PEPFAR program, and GAVI on health systems in developing countries. Some data will come out in the June 20th issue of the Lancet, but the editorial is misleading. | more

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria is currently facing a major financing shortfall. While the Foreign Operations subcommittee provided a welcome increase over the President’s request, today’s markup suggests that the U.S. is going to fall far short of its commitment to fund fully its fair share of the Global Fund’s resource needs, while the global economic recession undermines countries’ efforts to fight the three diseases. | more

Dr. Alan Berkman, Health GAP founder and 2009 Global Health Justice Award winner passed away on June 5th, 2009. Dr. Berkman was a long-time civil rights and AIDS activist. There will be a public memorial scheduled soon.| More

President Obama's 2010 budget request to Congress contains virtually no new money for global AIDS programs. The Global Fund, facing a $5 bn funding shortfall, gets no new money, and PEPFAR, which was just reauthorized and tripled in size, gets a 2% increase. | more
