| The US Global AIDS Plan |
Why should I spend four days to come to this training? Who should come to this training? What will I get out of the training? What will you expect out of me after the training? When and where is the training being held? What are the costs of the training? What if I can only come for some of the days? How do I travel to the training? Why should I spend four days to come to this training? The world is at a crossroads in our efforts to fight global AIDS. The U.S. and other wealthy nations are using the financial crisis as an excuse to scale back commitments to fight global AIDS, and this has resulted in waiting lists for AIDS drugs in several countries. People were promised AIDS treatment, but are now being told to go home and wait. Many of those people will die before medication gets to them, unless we can push the U.S. to keep the promise to fully fund global AIDS programs. Congress’s 2010 budget did not include any new money for global AIDS, even though a short six months before the budget was introduced, Congress overwhelmingly voted to triple the size of the global AIDS plan. We cannot let this happen again. Your help is needed to make sure the U.S. government does not backtrack on promises made to provide universal access to treatment, prevention and care for HIV to people around the world. We believe that no one should die of AIDS because they did not have access to medicine and prevention services to save their lives. If you believe this too, and you want to work to fight global AIDS in your community, then apply for this training!
Who should come to this training? IMPACT Global AIDS is open to anyone who resides in the United States, who describes themselves as an activist or is open to activism as a means of social change, and who wants to work with a team for a year to push for the U.S. to do more and do better in efforts to fight global AIDS. It is not necessary to have organized (or attended) a protest, or worked on global AIDS issues, you just need to be committed to fighting global AIDS through direct action, protest, advocacy and organizing. Specifically, the training is geared towards those who want to learn organizing skills, and not for experienced organizers. If you are an experienced organizer, and you would like to work with us on fighting global AIDS, email Health GAP’s Director of Organizing, Kaytee Riek, at kaytee@healthgap.org to find out about how you can get involved. What will I get out of the training? By attending the training, you will learn the skills you need to organize your community to fight global AIDS: base-building and mobilizing, media, designing and organizing actions, lobbying, and other skills. You will leave as an expert in U.S. global AIDS policy, and be able to apply policy knowledge to the development of a local campaign. You will work with other training participants to devise methods to support each other’s work throughout the year. And you will practice the skills you learn immediately, by participating in a lobby day and action on Capitol Hill on Monday, Feb. 22nd. What will you expect of me after the training? Because we cannot end AIDS by simply attending a training, participants will be expected to apply the skills learned at the training in their communities to organize people around global AIDS. Health GAP staff, and other participants, will support you in this with regular phone calls, trainings, and information sharing. Unfortunately, Health GAP does not have the resources to provide stipends or payment for your work as a part of the Action Team throughout the year. But we will provide training on fundraising for your efforts! When and where is the training being held? The training will be held from 5pm on Friday, February 19th until 5pm on Monday, February 22nd in Washington, DC. The specific location of the training is still being determined. Housing will be dorm-style, with shared rooms and bathrooms. Go to www.healthgap.org/impact2010 to apply for the training. After you’ve applied, a Health GAP staff person will call you to discuss your application, and your plans for working on global AIDS. Applications are due by January 31st, 2010.
What are the costs of the training? The training, accommodations, and food will be provided free of charge to participants. However, you will need to fund your own travel to Washington, DC for the training. We encourage you to seek travel funding from organizations you are a part of, or if you are a student, from your school. We do have a limited number of scholarships available for those who do not have the means (either personally or through organizational support) to get to DC without assistance. Email Kaytee Riek, Health GAP’s Director of Organizing, at kaytee@healthgap.org for information on scholarships. What if I can only come for some of the days? Email Kaytee (kaytee@healthgap.org) if you can only come for a portion of the training, but would still like to attend. If there’s space, and you are committed to working with Health GAP and other participants for a year to organize and fight global AIDS, then we will work with you on a case-by-case basis to try and accommodate your schedule restrictions. How do I travel to the training? You are responsible for your travel to and from the training. It will be held in the Washington, DC metro area, which is easily accessible by train, bus, car and plane. Please plan to arrive at the training site by 5pm on Friday, February 19th. The training will go until 5pm on Monday, February 22nd, so please plan departures accordingly. A limited number of travel scholarships are available. Contact Kaytee at kaytee@healthgap.org for more information. Do not book your travel until you have received confirmation of your acceptance to the training. Additional information about travel, including how to get from the airport, train station, bus station and major highways to the training location, will be provided closer to the training date.
