Misleading Information About Global Fund Seeks to Undermine a Leader in Development

Every dollar lost to theft or mismanagement means lives lost in global health—which is why the Global Fund’s model of full transparency and results-driven finance is essential and improving. Yet some—seeking excuses not to invest the resources needed to win the fight against the AIDS, TB, and malaria—are using the Global Fund’s transparency against it. | more

Obama's Global Fund Pledge of $4 billion over 3 years is "alarming"

Health GAP expressed profound disappointment today with the $4
billion, 3-year pledge by President Obama to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund). We are alarmed that this contribution fails to meet even the U.S. share of the “austerity” scenario projected by the Global Fund. | More

Latest Update: Global fund faces major funding crisis

The GFTAM is currently facing a $5 billion shortfall in order to meet the growing demand from countries applying for funding. Wealthy countries need to commit to fill the gap and save millions of lives. | Click here to read more about the funding shortfall

History of the Global Fund

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFTAM) was officially formed in 2002.  In January of 2009, it became an independent International Financial Institution (IFI).  In 2001 in Abuja, Nigeria, then UN Secretary, Kofi Anon declared the need for a global fund to fight AIDS.  But the real story is that AIDS activists hatched the plan for the global fund before the UN General Assembly Special Session on AIDS.  Thousands of people living with HIV from NYC, Philadelphia and around the world marched in pouring rain to demand a worldwide commitment to funding the fight against AIDS

The Global Fund is a unique global public/private partnership dedicated to attracting and disbursing additional resources to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. This partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and affected communities represents a new approach to international health financing. The Global Fund works in close collaboration with other bilateral and multilateral organizations to supplement existing efforts dealing with the three diseases.

Since its creation, GFTAM has approved funding of $11.4 billion for more than 550 programs in 136 countries. It is responsible for nearly a quarter of all international funding to fight AIDS around the world. It also provide two-thrirds of the funding for tuberculosis and three quarters of the funding for malaria.

Health GAP's Director of International Advocacy, Asia Russell, served as the Developed Country NGO representative to the Board of Directors of the GFTAM from 2007 to 2009. Contact her at asia at healthgap.org
