The US Global AIDS Plan

One of the greatest barriers to achieving universal access to medicine worldwide is the shortage of health workers. Without dramatically increasing the number of trained health professionals and community health workers, the US government will not be able to meet the promises made to treat millions of people, and prevent millions of new infections. The WHO-recommended minimum density of health workers to have sufficient medical staff to address global health challenges is 2.3 doctors, nurses and midwives per 1,000 country residents. But many countries in developing world fall far short of this goal.

Health GAP works in three ways to address the shortage of health workers.

  • US Government: Calling for the US Government to help countries develop and fund plans to increase the number of trained health professionals | more
  • IMF: Advocating for the International Monetary Fund to end policies which limit countries' ability to spend money on health and education | more
  • Positive Synergies Project: Collaborating with the World Health Organization and civil society allies to "Maximize Positive Synergies" between Global Health Initiatives like PEPFAR and the Global Fund, and local health systems | more
